Density of Aluminium
What is the density of aluminium?
The density of aluminium is 2.7 `\frac{g}{cm^{3}}` or `\frac{kg}{m^{3}}`. Density of aluminium varies in the range from 2.6 `\frac{g}{cm^{3}}` to 2.9 `\frac{g}{cm^{3}}`
Aluminium Density Formula
What is the aluminium density formula?
Density of aluminium = `=\frac{Mass}{Volume}`
The mass of aluminium is measured in grams, kilograms or pounds.
Volume of aluminium is measured in `cm^{3}` , m^{3} , in^{3} or mm^{3}
Aluminium Density Calculation
How is the density of aluminium calculated?
The density of aluminium is calculated by dividing the mass of the aluminium metal by its volume.
Density of Commercial Aluminium Alloy
What is the density of commercial aluminium alloy?
Density of commercial aluminium alloy varies in the range from 2.69 `\frac{g}{cm^{3}}` to 2.71 `\frac{g}{cm^{3}}`

| A356 | 2.68 |
Factors Deciding The Density of Aluminium
- Impurities in the aluminium metal: Pure aluminium (Al) has a density of 2.70 g/cm3, but as impurities in the metal increase, the atomic structure changes so does the density.
- Temperature: As the aluminium temperature increases, the metal starts to expand thermally. The density of aluminium is inversely proportional to the temperature.
- Alloy: Aluminium cannot be used in pure form, it is always combined with alloy materials such as copper, tin, magnesium and carbon to improve its strength, ductility, hardness, malleability and toughness etc. The density of aluminium changes with the change in the alloy elements.
- Different manufacturing processes, such as the casting process (aluminium sand casting, investment casting), metal undergoes a change in the internal structure and the porosity that affects the density.
- Phase transformation, Cold working & Deformation of metal: When there is a phase transformation during cooling, cold working and when it goes through deformation, the density of aluminium changes.
Importance of Aluminium Density
- The density of aluminium is important in calculating buoyancy and flotation while designing submarines and ships.
- Weight Calculation: While designing automobiles, engines, structures and electronic components, it becomes important to calculate and optimise the weight of the material; hence, the density of the material is important.
- Structural and mechanical design: Density plays a crucial role in designing mechanical and structural components, influencing factors such as stress, strain, ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, deformation, fatigue, and component failure.
